Best HYROX tips and race strategy: How to pace, transition, and perform at your best

4 days ago (edited)

I’m preparing for my first HYROX event in Hamburg and would love to hear your best tips and tricks.

How do you pace yourself between running and workout stations, and what should you focus on in the change zones to save time? I’m especially curious about race-day strategy, how fast to run, when to push, and what to be aware of to perform at my best.

I’ve never done a full HYROX race and I’m curious about the nitty-gritty: strength-saving techniques, how to squeeze out those last seconds, and personal experiences that really make a difference.

Awesome @karol - I am sure you'll love it 💪🏻

My tipps:

  • Carbs: Eat clean, carb-load moderately in the 2–3 days before, and make sure glycogen stores are full.

  • Start strong but not reckless: A quick 10–15s burst at the beginning is fine to tap into anaerobic reserves, but then consciously settle into your target pace. Overpacing in the first 2–3 minutes will punish you later 🥵! And remember: 50% of Hyrox is running. A solid pace leads to a solid timing.

  • ERGs: Don’t burn matches here. Going just 10s/500m faster feels huge in the moment but hardly changes your overall time – while costing a ton of energy.

  • Sled push & pull: Break the distance into halves. Push hard, pause for a breath, then continue. Trying to grind through in one go usually spikes your heart rate too much.

  • Burpee broad jumps: Jump far and use momentum (don't stop completely, makes it harder).

  • Farmer’s carry: Grip it and go. No break in between (obvious, right 😜)!

  • Walking lunges: A trick I use is 5 reps switching directly leg to leg, then 5 with a mini step reset. Helps keep form and avoid burning out on this station.

  • Mindset: Always smile 😅

Hope they are helpful 😉
