f.lux
f.lux (by JustGetFlux) is a software tool designed to make your digital screens safer and healthier after dark. It dynamically changes your display’s color tone over the course of the day, shifting toward warmer hues in the evening and reinstating more natural daylight tones in the morning.
By reducing the blue light your eyes are exposed to in late hours—a known disruptor of melatonin production—f.lux helps align your screen habits with circadian rhythms. This can improve your ability to fall asleep, reduce the strain on your visual system, and mitigate the chronic stress of late‑night screen exposure.
f.lux is available for macOS, Windows, Linux, and connects with lighting systems (e.g. Philips Hue) so that ambient room lighting follows the same rhythm as your display. It adapts based on your location (sunset/sunrise) and your ambient lighting condition, and includes modes for film viewing or dark rooms to avoid over‑reddening the display.
While f.lux is widely recommended in tech and wellness circles, some scientific studies suggest that tweaking display spectral output alone might not fully protect melatonin rhythms under all conditions. That said, for anyone committed to longevity, biohacking, or circadian optimization, f.lux offers a simple, free, and effective layer of protection with very low downside.
