Cutting the chance of getting a cold by 50% with just one supplement?

4 days ago (edited)

I recently came across a study claiming that taking an allicin supplement can reduce your chances of catching a cold by more than 50%.

I looked into it a bit and found that the study was done using the Allimax supplement from Allisure, and the lead researcher happened to be the founder of the brand.

That got me thinking.

Would you trust a study like this when it’s run by the brand itself?

Or do you tend to stay skeptical about these kinds of claims?

Also curious

Is there actually solid evidence that allicin or garlic supplements help prevent colds or shorten their duration?

I would not automatically ban any study run or financed by a company that benefits from it. But I would be a bit more sceptical than usual.

Regarding Garlic and Colds: "The rate (frequency of occurring) of the common cold has twice been found to be reduced by 60-70% in persons who take garlic supplementation daily; this is associated with both allicin and the aged garlic extract, and requires higher doses (2.5g aged extract or 180mg allicin)." {examine.com}

I'm no expert, but as a layman, I always think about ways to keep the intestinal barrier as healthy as possible: a good balance of fiber, fermented products, L-glutamine supplements, drinking plenty of fluids...
